The Friends of the Guilford Free Library Bus Trip 2017
Join us on Tuesday, May 9 for a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.
What to See in the MFA
In a word, plenty. In addition to the MFA’s comprehensive collection (fourth largest in the USA) and several recently re-installed galleries, there is an international traveling exhibition, “Matisse in the Studio,” which examines how objects from the artist’s personal collections influenced his art. “Make Way for Ducklings: The Art of Robert McCloskey” celebrates the 75th anniversary of the beloved Boston-based story, which influenced book illustration, sold more than two million copies, and inspired the bronze replicas in the Boston Public Garden. Also on view are superb American paintings going back to the colonial period; celebrated works by Turner, Monet, Gauguin and Caillebotte; Picassos and Pollocks; and the first painting Frida Kahlo ever sold. If you are feeling contemplative, you can stroll in the Tenshin-en Japanese garden, an arrangement of stones and plantings that symbolically expresses the vastness of nature. If you are feeling hungry, you can have a bite in one of the four restaurants. If money is burning a hole in your pocket, you can enjoy the bounty of the well-curated gift shops.
. . . and a Botticelli Bonus
If you can’t make it to Florence this spring, you can still get your fine art fix in Boston. The MFA will be hosting “Botticelli and the Search for the Divine,” the largest exhibition of the great Renaissance artist’s works ever shown in the United States. The show examines the artist’s shift from secular images of mythological gods and goddesses to more severe religious paintings.
