news-of-the-worldThe Library’s popular Future Classics book series returns this spring with a discussion of the 2016 novel “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles.

Yale Dean Mark Schenker describes the “News of the World” and “The Heart” as  “two of the best books I’ve read in the last few years.” Schenker is the Senior Associate Dean of  Yale College, the Dean of Academic Affairs; and a Lecturer in English.

“News of the World (2016) by Paulette Jiles was a National Book Award Finalist. In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. The novel was recently made into a film starring Tom Hanks.


We will discuss “The Heart” (2014) by Maylis de Kerangal on April 29, 20121 at 7 pm
