Reading can be stressful for children who are struggling with it, and reading to a silent furry partner can help. Sign up for a 15 minute reading slot with one of our licensed therapy dogs, Lucy and dog handler Ellen Siberman. Parent/legal guardian must sign a permission form for their child to be alone in the room with the dog and therapy supervisor. Sign up for each week separately. Ages 6 & up. Thursdays, October 4th-December 13th from 4:00-5:00pm (skip Thanksgiving Day, 11/22). You must call the library at (203) 453-8282 or stop by in person to sign up.
About Lucy from her handler, Ellen: Lucy is an apricot colored (pinkish) mini-poodle, about knee high. She was named after everyone’s favorite red-head, Lucille Ball. From Puppy Kindergarten, through Canine Good Citizen classes, and Therapy Dog workshops, Lucy has excelled in her training, whether meeting new people or presented with complex canine challenges. In 2011, we were accepted in the Yale New Haven Hospital Therapy Dog program visiting patients in Cardiology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics and the Smilow Cancer Hospital every week. We have retired from our volunteer work at the hospital now, and find great pleasure assisting the young readers of Guilford. Lucy likes to share a stool when being read to. Lucy turned 6 in January, and if you’re lucky, she might give you a high-five after reading.
