Yale Dean Mark Schenker presents a two-part series on reading James Joyce.

RECORDING May 19 “A Brief Introduction to How to Read James Joyce” will provide an overview of the author’s method, with examples from Dubliners (1914) and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), and a preview of Ulysses.

June 16 “Experiencing Ulysses” will explain why first-time readers of Joyce’s masterpiece should not try to “get” the novel or to puzzle out the meaning of each of its 18 chapters, but rather commit themselves to an engagement with the novel as a reading experience. Dean Schenker will illustrate how this works in a lecture-discussion that will invite participation from those attending.
