This week, we will be watching My Side of the Mountain, a live-action period piece set in the wilderness during the 1960s.  Based on the book of the same name, this movie follows the unique adventures of 13-year-old Sam Gribley.  Sam’s hero is naturalist poet Henry David Thoreau, and to emulate him, Sam writes his family a note, packs his bags, and leaves his home to realize his dream of wilderness living.  Sam is up to the challenge as he lives off the land, builds his own shelter, feeds himself, and learns to live in harmony with nature.  He gets to know some of the animals and wanderers he meets miles from civilization, but is it enough to make up for having no family or human friends around?

Runtime:  1 hour, 40 minutes.  Rated G.
