December at the Library

The holiday season is upon us and at the Library, we’re ready with lots of offerings!

Our Friends of the Guilford Free Library Holiday Book Sale kicked off the month with carefully selected choices for readers of all ages. The sale was another big success; thanks once again to the hard work of our Friends, the library is able to offer a wealth of programs and resources to our community.

For kids

The children’s calendar is full of seasonal fun. Follow the links to each program for more information and registration.

Get into the holiday spirit and learn about the legend of Krampus. Listen to a festive story and do a Krampus craft. Registration for this event is now full.

Long-time Guilford volunteer Jodi Marra will lead children in decorating her home-baked gingerbread houses and gingerbread Christmas scenes, which will then be displayed in the library for the holiday season.  For ages 9 & up only. The program is now full.

Listen to a dramatic reading of Eric Kimmel’s book, “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins,” with Guilford residents Julie Harris and Hesch Sommer,  followed by holiday music on guitar and flute.

Wear your comfiest pajamas to the library for a special winter-themed evening storytime featuring songs, puppets, and flannel board stories led by our librarian, Miss Melissa. Stuffed animals and pillows encouraged!

Come and celebrate the Solstice, the beginning of winter on the shortest day of the year, with stories, crafts, and activities for the whole family. The winter solstice has a rich history of celebration among many cultures, and we will learn about what solstice is and how it’s celebrated, then partake in several winter solstice traditions. For families with children ages 6 & up.

For teens and tweens

Teens and tweens can explore the interactive “31 Days of Holidays” calendar on display in the teen area. Every day a new “gift box” will be opened. On days with a puzzle or challenge enclosed, teens can earn candy prizes, available at the reference desk.

Check out a “surprise book” from the Young Adult stacks. Books will be hidden in festive wrapping for you to check out, bring home, unwrap and read. Discover a new favorite author!

It’s the great cookie bakeoff! Teams will be given a cookie recipe and ingredients. They’ll have one hour to make and decorate their cookies. At the end of the hour, everyone will taste and vote to decide the winners! This event is full; please call reference to join the waitlist.

For adults

Join the Guilford Poets Guild on December 14th to hear Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, A Christmas Carol, in Jennifer Munro’s dramatic, delightful and thoroughly English interpretation!

Join The Shoreline Jazz Quintet, Mike Bimonte on drums, Deepak Cyril D’Souza on saxophones, Rich Meyers on vibraphone, Steve Roane on acoustic bass and Steve Wood on electric guitar, for a celebration of holiday music.

Holiday Surprise Film

The Monday Night Movie series will offer a “holiday surprise” film on December 18th. The audience for the films on December 4 and December 11th will vote to decide what movie will be screened to celebrate the holiday.
