Come relax and enjoy some therapeutic time with Lilly, the gentle pup who’s sure to lift your spirits. This heartwarming session is dedicated to the healing power of pets and features special guest Lilly, the rescue dog!

Enjoy a talk by Dr. Garrett Dell on the philosophy of pet ownership, followed by a special book reading with Laura Dell. Lilly is featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from My Dog, and copies will be available for purchase. Don’t miss your chance to meet Lilly, purchase a book and get Lilly’s “paw print.”

Lilly Dell is a 6-year-old beagle and chihuahua mix from Tennessee. In 2020, she was rescued with her puppies and her sisters, Petunia and Pansy. Lilly was lovingly adopted by the Dell family of Guilford that same year, and she is now a certified therapy dog.  Lilly brings much happiness to her family and the children with whom she works. Much of Lilly’s therapy work is with her mom’s 5th and 6th grade students in Branford, but she also visits high schools and colleges, especially during exam time.  She also volunteers at Guilford Free Library for both the Paws and Read and Exam Cram programs. Lilly loves all people, but she is especially fond of children. She enjoys hearing stories and eating peanut butter.  Lilly’s favorite book is Harry the Dirty Dog, which her human sister reads to her each time she gets a bath.

Laura Dell has been teaching Spanish at the middle school level for over twenty years.  She has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Spanish, and a master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Southern Connecticut  State University.  She has been Lilly’s handler for three years.  Her essay, “I Owe it All to Lilly,” was recently published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from My Dog.

Garrett Dell has been working in higher education for twenty-five years.  His writing has been published in Humanities and Technology Review and in a college-level Ethics text, Living your Best Life: Making Decisions in a Complex World. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing, a master’s degree in liberal studies, and a doctorate in Humanities with a focus on literature and philosophy of technology.  He is an assistant professor of English and Philosophy at CT State Community College – Manchester.
