Event Details

The last surviving member of 60 players from the inaugural season of what became known as the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League — Betsy Jochum, died on May 31st of this year, aged 104. It therefore seems fitting to conclude the Monday Night Movies “summer blockbuster series with “A League of Their Own,” Penny Marshall’s 1992 film inspired by the story of the first women to play professional ball.

During World War II, when the men are fighting the war, the owners of the men’s teams decide to start a female league. Scouts are sent throughout the country to find female players, including Dottie and Kit Hinson, who will play for the Rockford Peaches, coached by former player and alcoholic, Jimmy Dugan. Dugan is not invested in the team’s success, so Dottie steps up.

(1992) 126 minutes, PG. Comedy, Drama. Showing at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 18th in the Library’s Meeting Room.
