In 15th-century France, the evil archdeacon of Notre Dame, Claude Frollo, develops a violent and unrequited love for the Roma Esmeralda and he instructs his charge, a hunchback named Quasimodo, to capture her. Esmeralda has eyes only for Phoebus, the Captain of the Guard, and jealous Frollo kills him, while framing Esmeralda for his murder. Quasimodo, the secluded outcast, must step in to save Esmeralda and the church of Notre Dame itself.
