One afternoon in 1971, Rubens Paiva, a former congressman and outspoken critic of Brazil’s newly instituted military dictatorship, was taken from his home in Rio de Janeiro by government officials, told nothing more than that he must give a “deposition” to authorities, and disappeared.
The story of his disappearance and its aftermath is told from the perspective of Ruben’s wife, Eunice, whose indefatigable search for the truth about her husband would stretch out for decades. A devastating true story that portrays human tenacity in the face of injustice. A 2025 Oscar winner for Best International Feature.
(2025). 135 minutes, PG-13, Drama, Biography, History. Showing at 6pm on Monday, March 31st in the Library’s Meeting Room. A Brazilian Portuguese-language film shown with captions.
