The Witness Stones Project is a non-profit educational initiative whose mission is to restore the history and honor the humanity of the enslaved individuals who helped build our communities.
The Witness Stones Project began in Guilford, Connecticut in 2017. Since then, the organization has partnered with more than 100 schools, churches, museums and civic organizations across five states. Over twelve thousand middle school, high school, and now college students and their communities have participated in the Project which has been lauded as a rigorous and transformative program.
Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Witness Stones Project, Dennis Culliton, will present an overview of projects executed across the northeast. He will also offer personal insights into the making of the documentary Unforgotten:Connecticut’s Hidden History of Slavery, which recently aired on CPTV.
Also presenting will be Pat Wilson Pheanious, former Connecticut state representative and chair of the board of directors of the Witness Stones. Her ancestors were among the first to be memorialized with Witness Stones in Guilford and she will be sharing her experiences with the project.
At the program’s conclusion, all are invited to attend the installation on the Green for the Witness Stone honoring Bristol, the enslaved individual being researched and remembered this year by students at Elizabeth C. Adams Middle School in Guilford.
This program is free and open to all.
