The Shoreline Jazz Quintet returns to the music of one of jazz’s most original voices, Thelonious Monk. Four years after its first tribute to Monk, the group revisits his remarkable catalog with an entirely new repertoire and fresh arrangements created especially for this concert. With the addition of vibraphone to the ensemble, familiar Monk classics take on new colors while preserving the wit, angular melodies, rich harmonies, and unmistakable swing that made Monk one of the most influential jazz composers. Whether you are a lifelong jazz enthusiast or discovering Monk for the first time, this program celebrates the timeless creativity of one of America’s great musical innovators.

The Shoreline Jazz Quintet (SJQ) features Mike Bimonte (drums), Deepak Cyril D’Souza (saxophones), Rich Meyers (vibraphone), Steve Roane (acoustic bass), and Steve Wood (guitar). Performing throughout Connecticut’s shoreline communities, SJQ presents an eclectic repertoire ranging from jazz standards to the music of influential modern composers. The ensemble has recorded and performed tribute programs celebrating the music of Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Pat Metheny, and a holiday collection. The Guilford performance marks a return to Monk’s music with an entirely new set of compositions and arrangements, now expanded to a quintet with the addition of vibraphone.

The library provides seating on the patio but you are welcome to bring your own chairs. In the case of rain, the concert will be moved inside to the Meeting Room.

This program is free and open to all.
