Join our Teen Summer Book Club led by 19th-century, mythology, humor & horror scholar, Catherine Riccio-Berry!

We will be reading two book this summer! Our July book is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and our August book is The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston.

Each week we’ll be discussing a particular section of each book. The schedule is below:

Frankenstein
July 16 – Letters 1-4
July 23 – Volume 1 (Chapters 1-8)
July 30 – Volume 2 (Chapters 9-17)
August 6 – Volume 3 (Chapters 18-24 and Walton’s closing letters)
The Woman Warrior
August 13 – 1st & 2nd sections: “No Name Woman” and “White Tigers”
August 20 – 3rd section: “Shaman”
August 27 – 4th & 5th sections: “At the Western Palace” and “Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe”

Why Should you join the Teen Summer Book Club

#1 – You’ll impress others with your new trivia knowledge. What do you get when you cross a zombie with an emo rocker? What does The Woman Warrior’s narrator have in common with the Greek god Hermes? What single real-life person inspired the original versions of both Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster? Catherine loves to share the fascinating (and sometimes outright bizarre) histories that surround a book’s creation and reputation. You’ll find out why these books are still worth reading today, too.

#2 – You don’t have to talk unless you want to. This is a no-pressure, judgement-free zone. If you have questions or ideas you want to share, then speak up! If you’d rather sit back and listen, that’s also fine. No one gets graded for participation here.

#3 – Get help with your assigned summer reading. Frankenstein and The Woman Warrior are on Guilford High’s recommended summer reading lists for Sophomore Honors English and IB Literature. Frankenstein is also the assigned summer text for AP Literature

Not in any of these classes? No problem! All high school students are welcome to join.

Worried you’ll fall behind? Catherine spent part of graduate school working for the Reading Institute, where she was trained as a reading speed and comprehension tutor. If you’re struggling, she can give you practical pointers to get back on track without stressing out.

Free and open to all high school students. Registration is required.
